It’s February, southern California survived the rains, and it feels great to play the piano again for the joy of it. When I don’t have a tour or a recording session coming up that I need to practice for, I like to just explore music – the more the merrier and lots of variety is just what I like. One of the great things about the piano is that there is so much music available to explore. Curious what I’ve been playing? First I went through all the Prokofiev Sonatas and most of French composer Maurice Ravel’s complete works for piano, and some Fats Waller - all very challenging to play I’m telling you! For fun, I’ve played some Miles Davis, some bossa novas, a book of Jule Styne compositions, and several compilations of classic jazz. What fun to sit at my beloved piano for a couple hours battling Prokofiev or discovering jazz gems! I’m excited to start on my new compositions too – the dozen little notated “embryos” of new music I sketched out during the holidays are patiently waiting for me to start on them this month and develop all new music before summer. This “composing season” for me is always an exciting time creatively. I really feels very fantastic to work on all these musical areas right now!
